Hiking around Santa Barbara

Rattlesnake Canyon Hike

Saturday May 14, 10 AM

Hiking distance: 3.5 Miles Round trip

Hiking time: 2 hours

Elevation: 1000 feet

This trail is the most popular one in Santa Barbara. It has a little bit of everything including waterfalls and small water pools and panoramic view of the Pacific and channel islands. The trail starts at the north corner of Skofield Park.

Please add your name if you are planning to go. It is not practical to use public transportation, so if you have a car, add your name and the number of people you can take with you.

Hikers:

Payam Rowghanian, Paul van der Schoot, Len Sander & Mae (spouse), Mike Hagan, Stefan Kesselheim

Car:

Payam Rowghanian,

Update: Transportation is resolved. Paul, Mike, and Stefan, I can pick you up at the KITP bus stop (the roundabout) at 9:30. Let me know if you don't need a ride. /Payam

Safety Note: There are Rattlesnakes in the canyon, and other hiking spots in this area. The biggest thing to keep in mind is to stay on the trail. Here are some more safety tips:
  • Wear shoes and long pants,
  • Avoid tall grass, weeds, or heavy underbrush,
  • Look for concealed snakes before picking up rocks, sticks, or wood,
  • Don't put your hand where you can not see,
  • Step "on" logs and rocks, not "over" them,
  • Use a walking stick, a snake can attack a stick instead of you,
  • Baby rattlesnakes are poisonous, stay away from them.

Comment: Last Sunday, we did a hike which I think is much more interesting, but might be more demanding; we are notoriously slow, but it took us 6 hours roundtrip -- but it deserves attention; views are outstanding. Ask me for details if interested. Shura
